What is the AvaLung System ?
When buried, the most likely cause of death is suffocation due to the amount of oxygen that is stored in the snow pack, which is typically about 15 minutes worth. The Avalung increases the amount of oxygen around you to about 58 minutes by drawing in oxygen that is around your body, not your mouth. Excess Co2 is then dispersed out around your back, stopping contamination and freezing of the snow pack.
The Avalung consists of a sling which is worn outside of the jacket, and a mouthpiece which tucks away into the sling, but is easily accessible in the event of an avalanche.
